Helpful Hints for Kittens

Exercise: Your kitten should be provided with ample opportunities for exercise on a daily basis. Providing safe toys that the kitten can chase and play with helps burn off energy and allows you to interact with your cat.

Socialization: Start exposing your kitten to different people and animals at an early age. Your kitten should have had at least the first set of vaccinations before being exposed to other pets and should only be exposed to those pets that you know to be healthy. Allowing your kitten to interact with different people at a young age may help to develop a better relationship with different people as an adult cat.

Collars/leashes: If your kitten wears a collar, it should be a "breakaway" collar that will unclasp or be easily escaped if the cat should get the collar caught on something. Cats can be taught to accept collars or harnesses with leashes for safer trips outdoors. You may want to put a bell on your cat's collar to make it easier to identify where he is in the house. If your cat is an avid hunter outdoors, this can also help to warn birds and other wildlife of his presence.

Feeding: Just as every person is different with regard to proper amounts of food, so are kittens. Feeding guidelines on food bags may or may not be appropriate for your cat. When feeding, it is important to feed to proper body condition.  We will show you how to assess this.

Pedicures: You should start massaging and handling your kitten's feet and toes at a young age. Progress, gradually, to holding the toes as though you were going to trim the nails. If the cat becomes nervous and struggles do not forcefully hold him down or yell at him as this will only make your job more difficult in the long run. We will show you how to properly trim the nails so that you can do this at home every 2-3 weeks or so.
